and now after the photographs, here is a thought. i read this on ragamuffin soul and it really got me started thinking. we spend pretty much 2 months celebrating Christmas. why do we only spend a few days celebrating Easter? the birth of our Savior is great, something very much worth celebrating, but it is the resurrection that completes the story. why don’t we celebrate Easter for almost 2 months?

When you say “we” spend 2 months celebrating Christmas, do you mean you and other Christians, or the world? I think I spend less time celebrating Christmas than do many avid shoppers who don’t even care about Jesus.
I think that’s why people celebrate Christmas more than Easter — because they’re not celebrating Jesus, or, if they think they are, they’re just celebrating vague ideas that they attach to Jesus that have little to do with the reason he came: being nice to people, giving gifts, “peace on earth” (not that anyone remembers the rest of that verse). It’s harder to celebrate Good Friday or Easter without having to look at Jesus dying on the cross and think about why that is.
Anyhow, the liturgical calendar, which traces the life of Jesus every year, does place more emphasis on Easter than Christmas. There are four Sundays in Advent, preparing for the coming of Jesus (and his coming again), and two Sundays of the Christmas season (which, contrary to secular practice, starts after Christmas; the song “The 12 Days of Christmas” is a reference to the liturgical Christmas).
However, there are six weeks of Lent (the current season) in preparation for Holy Week. And seven Sundays in the Easter season, including Easter itself. The focus is definitely on Good Friday and Easter in that calendar.

tis true todd. i totally didn’t think about lent and all that jazz. personally i side with you in that i don’t really celebrate christmas from the day after thanksgiving thru dec. 25. i love the easter season. i think i have more hope during the easter season. good comment though. thanks for the info on the liturgical calendar. like it.
